Running around shift work: how night runs fit in

Shift work and running clubs rarely line up, but a fortnightly night run gives nurses, hospitality and retail workers a fixed anchor no 5:45am club can offer.

Running around shift work: how night runs fit in

2 October 2026

Running with shift work works best when you stop chasing the 5:45am club model and anchor on a run that starts after dark. Hills Run Club's Tuesday Night Run meets at 6:45pm for a 7:00pm start at Castle Hill Showground, every second Tuesday, on a lit oval with plenty of parking. If you are a nurse coming off a day shift, a hospitality worker on a split, or a retail worker on late closes, that is a start time your roster can actually reach, and one lap of 3 km is a complete run on its own.

Why morning clubs don't work for shift workers

Most run clubs in Sydney start around dawn, and that format quietly locks out a big slice of the community. Nurses, paramedics, hospitality staff, retail workers, warehouse crews and everyone else who works while most people sleep keep hours that make a 5:45am meet unrealistic, especially on rotation.

The problem is not motivation. Someone who finishes a night shift at 7:00am, or starts one at 2:00pm, has no morning to give. When every club meets before work, shift workers end up running alone, and running alone is often the thing they were trying to avoid in the first place.

Running with shift work: start with a fortnightly anchor

The fix is to lower the bar from weekly to fortnightly and protect one slot. Hills Run Club's night runs happen every second Tuesday, so you get a fixed date every two weeks rather than a weekly commitment you keep missing. When you know the next one is a fortnight away, a rostered Tuesday night is not a failure, it just rolls to the next one.

An anchor run matters more than volume. One guaranteed run with other people every fortnight does more for consistency than a training plan that assumes a schedule you don't have.

What a Tuesday night run actually looks like

The group meets at 6:45pm at Castle Hill Showground for a 7:00pm start, running under the lights on a 3 km loop. You can do one lap or two, so 3 km or 6 km, and one lap is a full run, not a warm up. Walkers are welcome too, so the pace is genuinely your own.

Getting there is straightforward: enter the showground via Doran Drive, the entrance closest to the metro, take the first left and follow the road around to the lit oval. The group meets at the large shed, and there is plenty of parking around it. Coming straight from a shift on the metro is very doable.

Special events sit on top of the regular format, like the HRC Night Run x Sydney Thunder on Tuesday 6 October, so keep an eye on the upcoming runs page for what is coming up next.

And if the dark itself is what puts you off, we have written a whole guide on whether Hills Run Club night runs are safe. Short version: a lit oval, a group around you and a set loop take most of the risk out of running at night.

Building the rest of the week around the anchor

Once the fortnightly night run is locked in, the rest of your week can flex around it. A few patterns that work for shift workers:

  • Pair the run with a known roster point, like the first Tuesday after a block of days off.
  • Keep solo runs short and easy. Twenty to thirty minutes is plenty between club runs.
  • Judge your week by sleep, not by the calendar. A run that costs you two hours of sleep is not consistency, it is a deficit.
  • Register as soon as your roster drops, so the run is an appointment rather than an intention.

How different rosters can fit around the club

Your rosterWhen the club fitsBackup on the off weeks
Day shiftsThe Tuesday night run slots in after work most weeks, and the Thursday morning run works if your shift starts laterA short easy solo loop on the alternating Tuesday
Afternoon and evening shiftsThe Thursday morning run before a late start, plus the night run whenever your roster falls clearA walk or jog at lunch before you head in
Night shiftsThe night run before a block of nights, or in the late afternoon after wakingAn easy run soon after waking, while energy is up

Pick one row and live with it for a month before adjusting. Rosters reward routines that survive a bad week, not perfect ones.

Eating around a night run

Shift work scrambles meal timing, and running soon after a full meal is uncomfortable no matter when you clocked on. If you finish work at 5:30pm and the run starts at 7:00pm, a small snack before and dinner afterwards usually sits better than a big dinner at 6:00pm. If you have just woken from a day sleep before a block of nights, treat the run like a morning run and eat a light meal a couple of hours beforehand. Our guide to how long before a run you should eat covers the timing in detail.

How to join your first night run

Running with Hills Run Club is free. You make a free HRC+ account at hillsrunclub.com/hrc-plus/ and register for each run there, which is how the club knows who to expect and how you keep track of your runs and events. Membership also opens the door to partner offers, giveaways and member-only experiences.

Yes. The Tuesday Night Run offers 3 km or 6 km, one lap is a complete run, and walkers are welcome, so you can start wherever your fitness is.

Skip that one and catch the next. The run is fortnightly, so a missed Tuesday just moves you to the following one. Register for the Tuesdays your roster leaves free.

Running as a group on a lit oval is about as safe as night running gets. Lighting, visibility and getting home are covered in our guide to whether Hills Run Club night runs are safe.

It depends when you last ate. A small snack an hour or so before and dinner after usually sits better than a full meal straight before the run. Our eating timing guide has the details.
